Paella adventures

You all know I love to cook, I picked up a new paelo cookbook last week and decided the paella recipe sounded great. So here it is, I used chicken sausage instead of pork and supplemented with a whole gang of Thai chilies to spice it up. I loved it and it was the first time I’ve used saffron.

Don’t tell my son who hates cauliflower but there’s a whole head in this dish, ha, he had no clue. I just pulsed it as the recipe called for. Flavor was unbelievable. I can post the recipe if anyone is interested. This over 50 eating plan may be fun after all since my metabolism has decided it doesn’t want to work anymore.

Food changes and the gym will make it all ok

Kitchen remodel a wrap

The kitchen remodel is done. 3 weeks front to back is amazing, my builder is the man. To see the before look at the previous post but I have outlets and lighting everywhere not to mention unlimited cabinet space. My husband will be thrilled when he sees it for the first time in person this week. I have sent pictures daily but you can’t appreciate it until you walk in.

Goodbye little ugly kitchen

What do you do when your spouse is out of town for work? Remodel.

  • I have stated before how much I loathe the kitchen in our house.
  • I am way to short to reach ANY of the cabinets and the pink tile floor in conjunction with the brown and white mosaic floor is not beautiful.
  • My fashionista is screaming rip it out.

On Monday they are coming out, YES.

I have picked floors, cabinets, and sinks so let the demo begin. Photos are of the current kitchen, Don’t be jealous, I know it’s fancy

The remodel is moving along at record speed. Here we are over half way

Those mid century bar stools were the deal of the century, $30 for all 4, these are 200 stools , yes

Mushroom meat balls yes

The meal tonight for our pescatarian expedition was mushroom meatballs. Let me just say yes, these are great. You would never know unless I told you that there is zero meat. Recipe below:

  1. 2 containers button mushrooms
  2. Diced onion 1
  3. Rosemary and basil (as much as you like)
  4. Diced pepper (any color)
  5. Garlic
  6. 1 cup quick oats
  7. 1 cup bread crumbs
  8. 2 eggs
  9. Parmesan cheese
  • I threw the first 4 ingredients in a food processor and pulsed it, threw it into a skillet with some olive oil and sautéed with garlic until the liquid evaporated. This is important.
  • Now simply mix with the last 5 ingredients roll into balls and bake at 400 until golden brown. Spray the baking dish so they don’t stick
  • Then I opened a jarred marinara and added some fresh tomatoes, cheese peppers n heated it up, add the cooked meatballs to the sauce and you have dinner
  • I love carrots so I poured some half and half in a pot with fresh rosemary and some butter reduced and they were delicious
  • I know my photos suck but man was it great

    Plan and conquer

For a year we have been planning and saving to have the builder grade carpet in our living room and kitchen with a solid surface hand scraped laminate.  Yes laminate. I researched the maintenence of wood, engineered, and laminate. All wood must eventually be sanded and refinished, if you have animals scratches are a concern also, which peanut and daisy qualify.

Let me say as much as I love diy this was not a job I wanted to do. The tearing up of the sub floor in the kitchen did not sound fun and you tube proved it. The tools needed to cut, scrape, hammer, and fit also were alot. The flooring company did a great job but you all know I got a 30% discount cause im cheap and attended the home show just for this bargain. The young man who did the work had immigrated here from Russia and at 18 started his own business showing the value of diversity in the US. Hope you love it as much as I do

    Kitchen redo 101

20160730_232001When we moved into our house the first thing out of my mouth was holy yellow oak, and who would put a cabinet in the middle of a breakfast bar, so dumb.

So this week it was redone. I am cheap i admit it and i also love to paint so the choice was easy. General finishes milk paint, amazing, no sanding or priming required, just wash them down with tsp. We also took down the cabinets on the bar and turned them into a buffet, i hope you love the results cause i do.

So heres the breakdown of everything i used and costs:

    1. Old ironing board in garage as my saw horse, free and it worked great

    2. Qt general finishes milk paint $30, then a pint for touch up $18, qt satin finish for topcoat also general finishes $30

    3. Foam rollers and foam wedge brushes, $13

    Total cost $91

    Family/Fun/Fashion

    Out with the old

Today the new water heater was installed and I cannot believe how small it is compared to the 1960’s one he removed. I have been thinking a lot lately about what is truly important in life. This has been increased by a couple of great people being diagnosed with life threatening cancers out of the blue. One of these guys (Steve) gave a speech one day and his message was to not wait to go after your bucket list because you never know if you will be around that long. So I truly believe that this is going to be a year of big changes and all exciting, scary, and necessary. Keep your eyes open as it is going to be exciting.
